Tracking Hurricanes with Streamie

Recently, I found myself ~1,700 miles closer to where hurricanes often form. It was surprising having maybe two days to prep instead of a full week (or more).

Long ago, I added a NOAA-based weather module to Streamie. That’s been incredibly convenient and generally adequate, but the forecast doesn’t let me know, “hey, there’s a hurricane headed your way!” Which is unfortunate.

That got me thinking that I need a Hurricane Module. I couldn’t find a suitable NOAA API (something that included locations, pressures, etc). With such an API I was imagining having to draw a map somehow and then plot the hurricanes correctly. That’s not a small amount of work.

Instead, maybe I could just grab the image off the NOAA site and display that within a module….

Using the Custom Module feature in Streamie, I can whip up a little bit of JSON along with the NOAA image URL. In this example, we’re using the Atlantic area because that’s what I care about. NOAA also offers Eastern and Central Pacific maps. You can figure that out on your own.

Example JSON

With the JSON all written, I created the Custom Module in Streamie and pointed it at the new JSON file URL (you’re welcome to use this same URL; it is public).

After you save your new Custom Module, just tap on it and we’ve got hurricane tracking built right into Streamie.

The final step for me was to add this new hurricane tracker to the 2x2 group that I display on a TV in my office that also includes a slideshow, weather forecast and a clock.
