One of the most basic features of any camera streaming app is being able to live-stream your cameras. This is easy when you’re home. However, when you’re away from home, Streamie also makes it easy to live-stream remotely without any advanced firewall configuration.
Remote streaming works by having Streamie run on a device at home (where the cameras are located), while you are away from home with a 2nd device. So, the first requirement is that you have two devices paired together (see this article for details). The device at home must have the Streamie app running (it can’t be in the background).
Your home internet speed has two different limits: upstream and downstream. The downstream speed is what your ISP advertises. Your upstream speed is what will limit the remote streaming performance. You can use a website like fast.com to measure your home internet speed. The upload speed is what we care about for remote streaming.
The internet speed of the remote device is important as well; a decent cellular connection, for instance, should suffice.
You cannot remotely stream HomeKit cameras with Streamie. This is an Apple-imposed limitation. You can use the Apple’s Home app to remotely access HomeKit cameras (if the stars align and HomeKit isn’t in a bad mood).
Ensure that Remote Streaming is enabled for the Streamie device at home. In the Setting tab, go to Members, find the device in the list, and ensure the cloud icon is visible for that device. If it is not, tap on the device and choose “Enable remoting”.
You can test remote streaming while you’re at home if you can turn off wifi and use cellular.
When you’re gone for home, tap on the camera you want to stream. Tap on the “Switch to remote” button. At this point, Streamie will attempt to connect to Streamie running at home and Streamie at home will attempt to connect to the camera. If that all succeeds then the camera stream will appear shortly.
If you see an error stating that Streamie ran out of mappings to try, this means that it could not connect to any device at home that advertised being able to connect to the camera. Make sure Streamie at home is running, not in the background, and is connected to the same network as the camera.
