A webhook, generally speaking, is a mechanism that allows one service (such as a payment processor) to send a notification when an event occurs (such as a payment transaction). Instead of a client “polling” the payment processor: “are there any payments? are there any payments? are there any payments? …”, the client gives a special URL to the service provider as a webhook, and the service provider calls that URL when something interesting happens.
The Webhook feature of Streamie provides that special URL.
The initial motivation for Streamie’s webhook support is Rhombus. Streamie uses the Rhombus Secure Raw Stream for getting video from a camera, but a webhook is necessary to get metadata (such as event notifications).
There will be other use cases for Streamie’s webhook support. If you have a use case in mind, get in touch and tell us about it.
When you generate a webhook URL in Streamie, one component of the URL is an API key. That API key is secret. Do not share the URL with any entity other than the service for which you intend to receive event notifications.
